The Real Deathly Hallows in Welsh Myth
In Welsh Myth, the fairies brought four treasures to Ireland, The Hallows of Britain, which grew into Tarot symbols and the Deathly Hallows. We’ll learn about them all, from the spear that couldn’t be defeated to the sword of total destruction. Only one who is truly worthy, a symbolic king or those who he’s appointed to aid him, can wield these items. Being appointed is not enough: only those imbued with kingship can succeed.

Canon vs Fandom
The resurgence of sequels and expansions to existing franchises has started filling in the gaps where fandom and fanfiction once dwelled and thrived. Because of these additions, lifelong fans have been faced with the dilemma on whether to abandon their own headcanons and ideas of where the stories should go and accept the new stories as canon, or to reject them and continue their own speculation. Fantastic Beasts and Cursed Child, namely, have created new stories that have now begun to raise questions of what happens when fandom rejects canon, or when the fandom and canon seem to have different values and goals.

The Snitch, the Stone, and the Sword
Harry undergoes some of his most significant transformations in the series’ first book, whose original title refers to a process of transformation: Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone. He is repeatedly a catalyst for change—a human Philosopher’s Stone—as well as a human Golden Snitch and Sword of Gryffindor, destroyer of Horcruxes, though he is, paradoxically, a Horcrux himself. An exploration of Harry’s many literal and symbolic transformations.

The Tools and Talents of Albus Dumbledore
Contrary to the mystique surrounding Albus Dumbledore, he was not omniscient or omnipotent, but he did have a wide array of magical aides in his arsenal. He was a skilled Legilimens. He invented the deluminator, and presumably the magic that allowed Ron Weasley to return to his friends upon hearing his name. We will go through the HP books to spot instances where Dumbledore wielded these tools, and discuss how effective they were.

Sirius-ly Celebate? Sexuality and the Adults of Harry Potter
Many people find Sirius Black to be the sexiest character in the Harry Potter series, though no one knows if Sirius ever had a date! His love life is never mentioned in the books since there are more compelling things to know about him. A large group of fans believe that we never heard about Sirius’ love life since he was quietly dating Remus! This and the “outing” of Dumbledore leaves us with many questions regarding the sexuality of the adults in Harry Potter. During this roundtable, I propose a discussion regarding sexuality and the adult characters.

For Better or Worse: The Place of Harry Potter References in Current Political Discussions
This presentation will engage participants in conversation around the place of Harry Potter references and J. K. Rowling herself in the political arena since 2016. The focus of the session will not be on a particular political perspective, but on the positive and problematic use of fictional symbolism to build or subvert real efforts and actions. Discussion questions will explore how Harry Potter references have been used – or misused – by groups with divergent agendas to push emotional buttons in an already divided world.

The Wand Game
Why does Harry’s wand attack Voldemort? If Draco hadn’t disarmed Dumbledore, would Snape have been his wand’s master? And what links disarming to Quidditch? JK Rowling withholds key information about wands until the seventh book, including the existence of the Elder Wand; that disarming transfers mastery of a wand; and that part of a wizard’s power resides in the wand. A look at the role that The Wand Game plays in Harry’s victory over Voldemort.

To Kill a Mockingbird as an Influence on the Harry Potter Series
The beginning of To Kill a Mockingbird and the end of Harry Potter are the same story. Rowling pays tribute to several of Harper Lee’s themes. Racism and patriarchal abuse within families have catastrophic consequences. Sometimes justice is only possible by flouting the law. Empathy overcomes evil. Restraint can be the greatest bravery. And like Harper Lee, Rowling uses the naïve perspectives of a trio of children to convey her beautifully brutal story.

Credence and Fantastic Beasts: Harry Potter, But Not Safe for Children
What if Harry never got his Hogwarts letter? What if instead of inheriting a vault of gold, he’d stayed with the Dursleys? The Pantheon of Hogwarts Professors
All pantheons have similar archetypes: There’s Zeus, Odin, or Enlil, the father god. Demeter, Hathor, or Chicomecoatl, goddess of the harvest. The Hogwarts teachers as they sit along their long table reflect the ancient mythologies, from Dumbledore to Professor Sprout. Are they just reenacting the Roman gods, or are there other, closer correspondences? Exploring all these archetypes can deepen our understanding of the characters.

An examination of what these alignments reveal about the houses, Champions, tasks, and the Founders themselves, plus how they relate to the overarching theme of Rowling’s seven-book series.
